The 2022 Open Championship will be held at the birthplace of Golf, the legendary Old Course at St. Andrews. This will be the 150th Open Championship, and I expect it to come down to the wire come Sunday afternoon. The field this week will face fierce winds, harsh weather and for those less fortunate, the deadly Old Course bunkers.. The Old Course has over 120 scattered bunkers so accuracy will be a must throughout the tournament. If you find yourself in one of these pot bunkers, your week could very well be over. The historic course is a Par 72 with distance just a hair over 7,300 yards and plenty of scenic views.

Recent Open Championship winners include:

2021: Collin Morikawa (-15)
2020: No Open held
2019: Shane Lowry (-15)
2018: Francesco Molinari (-8)
2017: Jordan Spieth (-12)

The weather and wind will play a major factor for the field this week. The forecast for now is moderate but make no mistake, that can change in a moment’s notice. Managing spin in high wind conditions will be pivotal this week for the field. Some of the top players around the world when it comes to scoring in high wind conditions are as follows:

Tommy Fleetwood: Event Scoring Average – 70.86

Justin Rose: Event Scoring Average – 71.63

Louis Oosthuzien: Louis, since 2009, has 3 top 5 finishes at The Open.

Rory McIlroy: Event Scoring Average – 70.77. Rory leads all golfers since 2009 with 5 top 5 finishes at The Open.

These are just a few names to keep an eye on this week in regards to strong play in high winds. Other golfers with strong performances in tough conditions include Tony Finau, Shane Lowry, Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm, Will Zalatoris and the most recent Open Champion, Collin Morikawa.
